Privacy Notice Statement

The affirmation information you provide under any of the options outlined in the Directive on the Tri-Agency Policy on Indigenous Citizenship and Membership Affirmation is collected under the authority of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Act and/or the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Act​ and/or the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Act. The collection, use, retention and disposal of your personal information are in accordance with ​the Access to Information Act and Privacy Act.​

Purposes and Uses​

The aim of collecting documentation under Options 1 (Official Documents), 2 (Personal Statement with Supporting Documentation and Reference) or 3 (Institutional Attestation) as outlined in the Directive on the Tri-Agency Policy on Indigenous Citizenship and Membership Affirmation is to affirm Indigenous citizenship and/or membership within selected targeted opportunities to support Indigenous self-determination and reasonably ensure that opportunities set aside for First Nations, Inuit and Métis are held by them, as outlined in the Tri-Agency Policy and Directive on Indigenous Citizenship and Membership Affirmation. This information will be accessed by agency staff primarily for the purpose of confirming your eligibility for in-scope opportunities. Additionally, sharing information with an implicated Indigenous collective in select circumstances, as outlined below, respects the self-determination and self-government of the Indigenous collective, as outlined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. ​

The personal information you provide will only be used or disclosed for the following purposes:

  • ​Confirming eligibility for funding opportunities and recruitment for committees or special appointments within the scope of the Tri-Agency Policy on Indigenous Citizenship and Membership Affirmation;​
  • Affirmation information may be shared between CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC to facilitate the affirmation processes should you apply to multiple agencies;
  • Future program design and delivery, results measurement and reporting purposes;
  • In the content of an allegation of misrepresentation, share information with the Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research in accordance with the Tri-Agency Framework: Responsible Conduct of Research and with the integrity Advisory Committee (IAC) in accordance with the Tri-Agency Policy and Directive on Indigenous Citizenship and Membership Affirmation;
  • Your information may also be shared with the claimed Indigenous collective to confirm citizenship or membership and in the case of an allegation of misrepresentation to allow the collective to confirm or refute membership or citizenship, to provide an impact statement and recommendations on recourse to the Integrity Advisory Committee; or if additional validation is required to support an affirmation under Option 2 (Personal Statement with Supporting Documentation and Reference).

The submission of affirmation documentation is required in order for your application to be considered.​

Privacy Practices

Depending on the program, your personal information collected through this site will be stored on SSHRC, NSERC, or CIHR corporate systems and databases as indicated in SSHRC InfoSource Chapter – Bank number: SSHRC PPU 055 or SSHRC PPU 016, in NSERC’s InfoSource Chapter – Bank number: NSERC PPU 060, and in CIHR InfoSource Chapter – Bank number: CIHR PPU 005 and CIHR PPU 025. The information collected will be retained and disposed of in accordance with CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC’s respective retention and disposition schedule and in alignment and consultation with Multi Institutional Disposition Authorization
by Library and Archives Canada. The personal information you provide will be kept confidential and will not be used or disclosed for any other purposes without your consent or as may be required by law.

Your information will only be shared with the claimed Indigenous collective for the purposes outlined above and only if the collective has entered into an information sharing arrangement with SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR. Under such an arrangement, the Indigenous collective will be subject to the same measures as the agencies in the protection of privacy and the management of your personal information.

Confirmation and Privacy Rights

In addition to protecting your personal information, the Privacy Act gives you the right to request access to and correction of your personal information.
